The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) warned the public of a circulating post on social media about a strong typhoon named “Hagupit” that will supposedly hit the country this December.

It‘s a hoax, NDRRMC spokesperson Mina Marasigan said in a statement.

“The post refers to an event that occurred in 2014. Therefore, the information is no longer current,” she said. “The NDRRMC wishes to assure the public that the nation is prepared for any emergency as part of the standard procedure.”

She also asked the public to exercise caution when sharing critical information such as warnings regarding hazards.

“Please disseminate information coming from trusted and reliable sources, specifically agencies mandated to provide warnings about hazards such as Pagasa [Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration], Phivolcs [Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology] and OCD (Office of Civil Defense),” she said. /atm
