Smog seen forming in Quezon City as cold weather sets in

MANILA, Philippines—Hazy roads greeted motorists in Quezon City on Wednesday morning, which the weather bureau said was caused by smog, a combination of smoke and fog.

The cold weather, which caused the formation of fog was not due to the amihan or northeast monsoon, but was due to the rains being experienced in Metro Manila for a whole day, which, in turn, caused a drop in temperature, according to forecaster Raymond Ordinario of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

Since the temperature on the ground was too cold, there was an immediate condensation of the water vapor, which did not rise and which then formed a cloud-like fog on the ground, Ordinario explained.

Sightings of the smog was reported on Commonwealth Avenue and East Avenue in Quezon City.

If the sun shines on Wednesday, no fog could be expected on Thursday or in the coming days.

The amihan, which brings the cold, dry air from Siberia into the country, is expected to arrive in about a couple of weeks.
