Public warned against sale of ‘double dead meat’ during Holidays

MANILA, Philippines – The National Meat Inspection Service reminded the public to be cautious in buying meat and processed foods, especially since the sale of “double dead” meat abound during the Yuletide season, a report from Radyo Inquirer 990AM said Tuesday.

“Double dead” means livestock or poultry that have died due to disease, was slaughtered, and then sold as fresh meat to consumers.

NMIS Executive Director Jean Bacayo was quoted as saying that it was safer to buy meat products and other processed foods in malls and groceries as they have passed the quality control requirements of NMIS.

However, if buying in public markets can’t be helped, Bacayo suggested asking dealers first for the NMIS certificates on their meat products.

Bacayo also said that the NMIS has deployed over 300 personnel to inspect the meat products.
