ILIGAN CITY – A remnant of the Islamic State-inspired militants was killed in the main battle area (MBA) in Marawi City on Tuesday morning.

Col. Romeo Brawner Jr., deputy commander of Joint Task Group Ranao, said the “straggler” tried to get out of the battle area at around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Brawner said the straggler was killed because he fought it out the government troops.

“It’s possible that he ran out of food, or it could that he was running out of bullets,” Brawner said.

As of Monday, gunfire and bomb explosions can still be heard from the main battle area even with the termination of combat operation last October 23.

Lt. Col. Manny Garcia, commander of 4th Civil Relations Group, however, said the explosions and gunfire could just be reconnaissance fire or unexploded ordnance being disposed during clearing operations.
