BAYBAY CITY, Leyte—The suspected right-hand man of a big-time drug pusher managed to escape his jail escorts while on his way to attend a court hearing in this city on Tuesday morning.

Job Porazo, a detainee of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, had just arrived at the Hall of Justice with 10 other inmates about 8:30 a.m. when he suddenly dashed toward a black Honda TMX motorcycle whose driver wore a full-faced helmet.

Porazo rode on the motorcycle and managed to escape.

Jail Officer 1 Haniel Alatraca, one of the escorts, said he pulled out his service firearm and fired at the detainee but failed to hit him.

He said Porazo was able to flee because the detainee was the only one handcuffed alone while the others were handcuffed in pairs.

But Supt. Ramil Amodia, police chief of Baybay City, said in a phone interview that Porazo shared a handcuff with another inmate.

“It appeared that while he was handcuffed together with another inmate, (the handcuff) was loose that enabled him to run and escape,” Amodia said. “I think it was a planned move because there was this guy waiting on board a motorcycle for him (that) he used to escape.” Amodia said.

A pursuit operation has been launched.

According to police, the suspect was spotted boarding a commercial vessel in a seaport in Hilongos, Leyte. The vessel was bound for Cebu City.

Porazo, in his 30s, was detained at the Baybay City Jail on March 4, for illegal possession of drugs.
