After almost three years, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has finally finished repair works on the Magallanes Interchange in Makati City.

DPWH – National Capital Region director Melvin Navarro said the rehabilitation effort sought to restore the structural integrity of the 41-year-old interchange.

“We are happy to announce that we were able to do all the much-needed strengthening works at Magallanes Interchange, one of the busiest elevated intersections in Metro Manila,” he said on Friday. “With the completion of the project, (it) will be able to cope with extreme events such as earthquakes.”

The repair works started in August 2014 and were done in five stages, including asphalt overlays.

The Magallanes Interchange has served as a junction between the South Luzon Expressway and Edsa since 1975. It was last repaired in the 1980s.

Fresh improvements were deemed necessary after the structure was observed to have cracks on the concrete and damage on the guard rails and steel expansion joints.

Earlier, the DPWH also completed the rehabilitation of Ayala and Quezon bridges in Manila. JULIE M. AURELIO
