Negros Occidental students have the chance to take their senior high school studies in Japan with all expenses paid.

According to the Philippine News Agency, the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental partnered with Miyakonojo Higashi High School to provide ten scholarships to “poor but motivated and deserving Negrense youth.”

The Japanese high school will cover tuition and accommodation, while the local government has initially allotted P1.4 million to cover other expenses—including visa and passport processing, transportation, monthly allowance, enrolment, school uniform and textbooks.

Karen Dinsay, head of the Negros Occidental Scholarship Division, said students will take courses on general healthcare and automotive courses for three years.

They can then opt to work in Japan or continue college in the Philippines. Outstanding students could even have another scholarship in an East Asian country. Under the K to 12 program, senior high school graduates are expected to be qualified to work or to pursue higher studies globally.

The scholarship begins 2018. The local government will select students this year, while the partner high school will conduct further screening. Students must be at least 16 years old to be eligible for the scholarship.

The program aims to promote sustainable international education and provide cultural development between the Philippines and Japan, said Sixth District Board Member Pedro Zayco, chairman of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) committee on education.
