The Suez Canal, one of the most important waterways in the world, was opened on Nov. 17, 1869. This shortened  the ship travel time between the Philippines and Spain to 30 days, allowing many Filipinos to go to Europe to further their studies. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
