Philippine Air Force steps up air strikes

Targets are the lawless elements for all-out justice

Philippine Air Force (PAF) planes pounded for a second straight day Tuesday a suspected stronghold of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in an air and ground operation that has prompted the evacuation of some 14,000 people, officials said.

General Eduardo Oban, chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, flew to Zamboanga City to direct air and ground operations against MILF “rogue elements,” a day after President Benigno Aquino III ordered “all-out” justice for 19 soldiers slaughtered in Basilan province on October 18.

“I am here to translate directives of the President into operational goals,” Oban told reporters during a visit Tuesday to wounded soldiers in Zamboanga City.

He stressed that the targets of the military offensive were “lawless elements” in Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay province.

Oban also presided over a regional command conference and reminded soldiers to strictly adhere to the rules of engagement and to respect human rights.

Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Soliman said at least 1,100 families, or 5,500 people, had been evacuated in Zamboanga Sibugay. She said that another 1,700 families, or 8,500 people, had fled their homes in Basilan.

Soliman said the evacuees were in makeshift encampments and were being given food packs.

“We are prepared to ensure the basic needs of civilians and make sure that the life they lead is undertaken close to normal. That way, they will recover faster,” she told reporters.

Colonel Arnulfo Burgos Jr., AFP spokesperson, said there would be no letup in the air and ground offensive even after the MILF disowned a notorious kidnap leader who is the subject of the military assault.

Burgos said PAF OV-10 attack planes made two sorties on Tuesday after making three sorties the day before. No new casualties were reported as of press time.

MILF protest

On Monday, two soldiers were killed while four others were wounded while at least six outlaws were killed and about 40 others believed wounded, Burgos said.

Lieutenant Colonel Randolph Cabangbang, spokesperson of the Western Mindanao Command in Zamboanga City, said four gunmen were killed and an undetermined number of others were wounded in the bombing run. He said three others were captured.

MILF spokesperson Von Al Haq yesterday protested the government action.

“Our men were being targeted. What they are doing is launching attacks in the guise of running after kidnappers and other lawless elements. But the actual targets are our men. They have done this before,” he told reporters.

Al Haq said that as a result of the offensive, a visit of the Malaysian-led International Monitoring Team had been postponed.

The MILF spokesperson also accused the military of using poison gas. He said MILF fighters were complaining of itchy skins after the air strikes.

Oban denied the charge. “We don’t use napalm,” he said.

Surrender demands

Also on Tuesday, the MILF, through the Ad Hoc Joint Action Group (AHJAG), told their military counterparts that Waning Abdusalam, one of the objects of the offensive, was no longer a member.

The MILF also claimed that the Jakaira brothers, Putot and Ogis, who are also wanted for kidnapping, had fled to Basilan.

The AFP on Saturday demanded that the MILF turn over Abdusalam and the Jakairas.

“(The MILF said) Waning Abdusalam is no longer in their record. That means he is no longer MILF. The Jakaria brothers who are notorious outlaws and kidnappers, according to the text message from BIAF (Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces), are now hiding in Basilan,” Burgos said.

Burgos said the MILF’s admission that Abdusalam was no longer part of the group meant that the MILF should stop attacking government forces involved in the Zamboanga Sibugay assault.

“They (MILF) can no longer accuse us of violating the ceasefire agreement,” he said.

Burgos said ground troops were encountering “continuous resistance” from the outlaws in the rough terrain.

He said the MILF also had not responded to the AFP’s demand to surrender rebel leaders Dan Asnawi, Long Malat and Furuji Indama who led the ambush in Al-Barka, Basilan, on October 18 that killed 19 Army Special Forces soldiers and wounded 14 others.

Show of good faith

Lawmakers on Tuesday urged the MILF to show good faith by surrendering the perpetrators of the October 18 massacre.

Cavite Representative Joseph  Abaya said during the “Ugnayan sa Batasan” forum that  capturing  Asnawi and his men would be proof of the MILF’s seriousness in negotiating for a peace pact.

He said Asnawi’s “ultimate neutralization or his ultimate arrest” was a critical goal.

Western Samar Representative Mel Senen Sarmiento said that the President had done his part in “confidence building” in the peace negotiations and the ball was clearly in the hands of the MILF.

“I don’t think they (MILF) should be coddling wanted criminals. They cannot go to the MILF protected areas whenever they are cornered by the military,’’ Sarmiento said.

Local execs involved

Interior Secretary Jesse M. Robredo on Tuesday said he believed some local officials were involved in lawless activities in Mindanao, including last week’s rebel attacks.

He said the Department of the Interior and Local Government had drawn up a list of about 40 names, from municipal mayor to barangay councilman, whose loyalties were suspect.

“We can’t be sure of the loyalties of some people in local government. Either they have been coerced into cooperating with the rebels or they’re sympathetic to their cause,” Robredo told a press briefing at Camp Crame.

He noted that in some towns, the local officials were related by blood to the criminals, some of them belonging to breakaway MILF factions.

List of names for verification

“We have a list that we need to verify even before this whole thing happened. These are not just in Basilan but also in Sulu… There are barangay captains and even a municipal mayor on that list,” Robredo told reporters.

He said once an investigation proved the connections, charges would be filed against the officials, although he did not give a time frame.

Robredo met with the governors who had requested an audience with him to discuss the situation in Mindanao and to express their support for President Aquino’s position not to wage an “all-out war” against the MILF renegades.

“Let the mechanisms of the peace process and the ceasefire agreement move to protect Mindanao from even greater tragedies,” the governors said in the statement. This bombing sorties using our superslownic de-elisi Broncos (upgraded version of tora-tora) to go after the “lawless” elements that massacred our soldiers in Basilan is a knee-jerk and tantrum reaction of the military smacks of an “all-out-war” similar to burning a whole household just to kill a single rat – the collateral damage is too heavy but no assurance of hitting the right target. Gen. Oban, your statements to the media is well calibrated and clothed with the usual equivocal meanings when you said ” am here to translate the directives of the President”. If I may interpret that, it will be like this, ” we are bombing relentlessly even if only the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees are obvious casualties”. Why until now only the evacuation of 14,000 civilians are the sorry accomplishments and ZERO on your target. What actually were the President’s directives? So, far the excitement I got is not from the heavy bombings and evacuations but from the puzzling and convoluted statements that caught the millions of Filipinos gasping heavily for its updated translation from your end? At least am enjoying your difficult position now. I am in Boracay right now.

The AFP should press the attack until the MILF is forced to let go off those lawless elements it is sheltering. The refusal of the MILF to turnover the identified criminals  is yet another  unmistakable proof that it is insincere and only trying to put one over the government in this peace negotiation thing.  Since it has already started the business anyway, the AFP might as well keep up the offensive until those Moros are all good Moros, or shout uncle.

The OV -10 Bronco is specifically built  for Counter Insurgency (COIN) operation  It was  first built  in the early 60′s. it saw a lot of action during the Vietnamn war, in various capacity. It could be converted to carry 6 paratroupers.or two litter  with an attending  nurse  It could be fitted with various armament to fit its mission.  Because  it is much slower that a  figther jet. Its  is very effective for  close air support. With the advent  of combat helicopters  the OV-10  role as a close air support slowly  disappeared. The US military lost about  87 OV-10  during the Vietnamn war. It last  saw action during the first gulf war, flown by US marines.conducting reconnaisance and aerial photography. When an OV-10 was lost  to ground fire during the gulf war.. the US military concluded that is absolete. and too slow for antiaircraft gun.

OV-10 might be an old technoogy. It is  very effective for COIN  operation, close air support. But any military commader knows that air war alone could  not win a war. This was proven once more during the  first gulf war. when the US and its allies  using state of the art war planes,  bomb with pinpoint accuracy high value target across Irag for weeks .But.. it was only after ground war which lasted only for about 90 hours that Irag finally surrendered. We need foot soldiers to secure the the gains of the war.

Now the  operation of the  PAF ordered  by Pnoy against elements of  the MILF.. we have yet to  hear what  is going on on the ground. Look  like there  is no ground  componemt of the operation.Where is the Army,  Marines and the Police . we need boots on the ground  to secure what  ever is  achieved  in  the aerial bombing. It would  not be a surprise to see after the smoke of battle  have cleared   that  no  significant casualty have been inflicted on the MILF rebels

Its getting clear that Pnoy order  these bombing as a show of force.. to save his face  and  not be called a weakling president.

The Philippine should strongly consider developing a missile systems, with bunker busting capacity, or thick iron plating busting capacity, a guidance system for a missile. We need SAMS, SAS missiles to to protect our countyr`s integrity with precision guidance reducing collateral damage, this will also help decide skirmishes, ambush, or even a protracted trench war. We do not require an airforce plane to deliver a missile and can be launch inside the bases, cheaper but very effective and can be mounted in airplanes, naval vessels or army mechanized troops. The key now to rise above surpirse attacks is to have a precision guidance weapons that will take out their positions and not knowing what had hit them. The government should fund the R&D and instruct the  DOST and AFP to commit manpower and cooperate in research and development.

They will support their brothers, the MILF rather than cooperate with the central government. They are not traitors to their brothers, but are traitors to the rest of Filipinos.

The correct response to the latest incident that killed 19 Philippine military troops in Basilan is exactly what the president has pronounced: avoid turning it into a full-blown war, keep the peace process alive, while pursuing all-out justice. We did not learn our lessons. Yang giyera ay papogi lang. Kunwari macho at Rambo. It is senseless.

You can only win war, if we get their mind and heart. Let the peace talks continue, I mean with sincerity.

Now, we need the support of UNITED NATIONS PEACE KEEPING TROOPS. More than 120,000 Filipinos had been killed and we wanted to increase that. I think, the Philippines now has the right to ask assistance from the United Nations.

Punta naman kayo sa Muslim leaders and convince them not to finance war in the Philippines. Our intelligent (intelidrink?) should furnish them of  report of foreign interventions. Punta kayo sa Wikileaks or CIA, KGB, and British spies, they can share you information.

Band Aid Solution lang ang pag bomba sa mga kota.

    • Anonymous

The United Nations paid Filipino Peace keepers that went to the pabaon generals, remember?

A Filipino General went to United Nations, flash his badge.  Went in and collected milyon-na-milyon pesos in Filipino Peace keeping force and went to the pabaons …. HAWR! HAWR! HAWR!

So, can Filipinos afford United Nation Peace Keepers?  They are not for free, you know!  HAWR! HAWR! HAWR!

The MILF  already confirmed that it was their group that massacred those soldiers and they did it because the soldiers allegedly trespassed on their territory. This talk by the government that they are only after lawless element and not the MILF is weird, to say the least, in the light of MILF’s admission of guilt. Why doesn;’t this government admit that they have no will or intention to have a frontal confrontation with the MILF? Has there been any secret agreement forged in Japan along these lines?

    • Anonymous

Absolutely, there was a forged agreement in Japan. 5 million changed hands in Japan. Pnoy gave the check to MILF Chairman Al Haj Murad Ibrahim. So these is the transparent government of Pnoy, selling us out to the MILF. I wonder what are the rest of the forged agreement? Could it be an autonomy or a substate for MILF. What kind of concessions was promised to Pnoy in return? Was Pnoy promised as an equal partner in all the untapped resources Mindanao has to offer? Pnoy is Chinese by ancestry, willing and dealing is in his blood like any other Chinese. Corruptions runs deep with these Chinese when it comes to money. They will sell their soul for money and wealth. I can sense these speculations through Pnoy’s actions and his timid approach against the MILF. There is a cover up and conspiracy going on big time!!!!………. Watch out folks!!!
God save the Philippines………………………….if my observation is correct…..

It’s so shameful for the military to brag about their bombing of Sibugay,  Zambo. You have the superiority in everything except courage and gallantry and a just cause, the rebel has. All rebel in the Philippines are rag tag band against a standing army. WHEW. And you cause evacuation and  misery to people because you can’t confront the rebel with out mortars and fighter bomber. What does it says about you? Soldiers of rice and fish. Are you only good at arresting, harassing, torturing defenseless citizens. Are you only expert in committing graft and corrupt practices? Where is your so called special forces skills that you spent so much government time and money to train and with the help of the US instigator.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NXU2XGAHFDYLAQULE3TMTR6SWU Brando

Arao_liwanag, the military did not brag about its bombing of Sibugay. It is the media that aired it. On the matter of ineptness of the soldiers to fight on the ground, it is not what you can see in the movies. They are all fictions. There are many considerations for the soldiers to win in a battle. One of which is the lack of intelligence that is pinpoint and real time. This could not be easily achieved without money. And money is lacking for intelligence efforts, an insider in the AFP claims. Remember that the rebels live in their own community and therefore in the midst of people who are mostly their relatives. Before the army can reach their positions, their relatives would forewarn them as they serve as their security buffers. You can’t attain element of surprise in your attack against the enemy if you don’t have a real time and pinpoint intelligence which is very crucial in a guerrilla war like what we have with the MILF, my mole further says. Don’t you know that the intelligence fund of the President is bigger than those of the AFP and PNP combined?

      • Anonymous

It seems, that the military no longer have the respect of the citizen except for us who are opinionated. Then they should re orient as to whom and for whom should they be serving and loyal. I think to the people. Henceforth, if they are for the country and people, and so is the NPA and the Bangsa Moro Army, as they all claim and I believe they all have constituencies, They are the ultimate welder of power even with the passive support of the people, they can change the country for the better. Sixty decades is too long for this Elite Politician. Their time is up. The trio should talk and agree on a battle plan an a coalition government and comprehensive national development program. What is holding you guys. Grow up! Spare the people form suffering, spare country from civil strife.

    • http://twitter.com/Stryker0065 Peter Solquillo

You can’t call them the armed forces without expecting them to use all the arms at their disposal right? If I go to war i would want to use all the asset at my disposal.  Do the MILF fight fair? No they run and hide and even use govt projects as bunkers. The Armed forces aren’t allowed to use Napalm( best weapon to use on the MILF if you ask me)

      • Anonymous

You don’t know what you are talking about. There are laws of war, if you are the one commanding an army at war you are a criminal and violator of human rights worst than Hitler. I think, your sympathy for your army is doing harm than good.

The MILF or other rebel group, base on what they have done could not be accused of such crime and violation because their very existence is outside the law. Everything they are doing are already define by the criminal code. Your army are expected to conduct themselves like an officer and a gentleman ( they are just afraid to die so they complain and whine ), not a criminal, mercenary or what have you. Your army is armed and paid by the republic and that includes all Filipinos even those that do not agree with you and the political Leadership.

You accused the rebel of being unfair, who steal their land, mine their resources, ruined your environment, who invited the foreign corporation to come to your land to take advantage of cheap labor and cheap prostitute. these are the problem that should be address. Remove the cause of rebellion, poverty, injustice and exploitation, and it will just die down.

Finally, let me give you this quote of a famous Filipino, Jose Rizal: “Justice subdue the most barbaric, Injustice causes the weakest to revolt”.

Last advice for all people of your kind low intellect: Speak not all of what you think and think before you speak. Grow up!

In the first place, demands of the MILF to grant them “sub-state” or “independent state” or “liberations” are non negotiable!  These are demands/declarations that they do not wish to be part of the Philippines, hence, they do not wish to be Filipino citizens!  Then, why pursue peace talks? They already have the ARMM as a supposed solution to their problem, what more can we give? What is there to talk? We’ve been talking since time immemorial (translated in billions of pesos) what have we achieved?  What makes Pnoy think that under his presidency, we are better negotiators and that we can achieve lasting peace under his turf?  PLEASE WAKE UP!

The Moro secessionist movement has been with us with no end in sight because all this time we move forward, chill, move backward and forward without a clear direction.  Sometimes our soldiers on the verge of a kill, receive a ceasefire order in the field and had to move back.  Politics, now even muddled by foreign interventions, gets in the way, hoping against hope that “something better” would come out of not finishing the enemy.  Of course, there is concern for loss of life, social displacement, reconstruction, and the like.  But, having adopted that policy, has it turned out to be better for the whole nation or just prolonged the war, violence, kidnapping, deception, destruction of our institutions, etc.?  While life is sacred and lasting peace an ideal, have we achieved it up to this time in rebel-infested areas?  The rebels have only found allies, gathered more strength, galvanized themselves due to our indecisions hoping to get substantial victories as a springboard and motivation to bigger victories until they reach their goals as an independent Muslim state.  If the Philippine government cannot see that underlying strategy, they will negotiate with a group but will see the proliferation of other groups, political, armed or bandit or guirilla type of operation, never ending the war and thus only suffering the toll of lack of literacy, on-going poverty, deficient progress and stunted economic growth for the region that could have constructively contributed to the development of the Philippines as one nation with diverse ethnic cultures.

The original natives of Mindanao were not so belligerent and could easily absorb the peaceful cultures of succeeding waves of immigrants to the region.  The missionary Islamist warriors that later came to spread their religion introduced guns and the mission to die for their group’s faith.  Now we see the proliferation of guns in the region by groups that this government cannot control to impose the rule of law, right within the territorial sovereignty of the country!  When an armed group commits a crime against the laws of the country, it is disowned as no longer belonging to the bigger group.  When elements of the law run after renegades and scalawags among them, however, the bigger group claims they were not notified and bring in “violation of the peace process” by not informing them that pursuit operations would be conducted in rebel territories, as though the latter is not anymore a part of the Philippines.  If they are informed beforehand, the rogue elements are warned to escape.  If subsequent investigation is carried out to find that the renegade member has been in their camps, the person is either disowned or said to have fled out of their lair.  Let the crap end; MINDANAO could have been free, democratic and prosperous a long time ago had all the money-spending to find that elusive peace been used to end the war, reconstruct Mindanao, strictly monitor its security, peace and order so that rebellion may not rear its ugly head again and spread the blessings of democracy there, weeding out poverty and corruption so that no reason for dismembering the nation could be the convenient excuse for an uprising, as religious and cultural differences are guaranteed by the Philippine Constitution and implemented.

The Philippine military and law enforcement agencies of government should adopt relevant, necessary modern training and equipments (particularly for land troops) suitable for the kind of operation needed, with the proper air and sea support.  A change of strategy, lots of pertinent intelligence and government confidence building community programs should be built into the military strategy to minimize the loss of life and displacement of communities for a long duration.  An element of swiftness, therefore, coupled with knowledge of the terrain, with tactical  movements difficult to be monitored by the enemy could manuever troops and other military assets well into victory.  Then the more difficult task of the military of turning guns and equipment into plowshares could begin.  Cost-benefit analysis. Though not a very ideal road to take, sometimes the bitter medicine can save lives and this nation under God.

In war, you must defeat the enemy’s will to fight. Showcasing you air power is necessary to achieve this. Make him unable to control his fear because of the bombs… if you can’t hit him right away. If he can see his family running away without food, sleep and yes, medicine, there is a big chance the enemy will talk peace with you…under your terms, not his. Read insurgency war stories. Hear lessons from experts. Learn from them.

If the MILF issue is an experiment, same like what we were doing during our elementary days.Like ·  · 6 minutes ago · Beng Grande ‎19 soldiers died during the Al-Barka, Basilan, 6 of them were captured alive, executed later, MILF owned up to the encounter. – FACTOur president met “secretly “with the MILF leadership last August, proceedings not disclosed to the public. – FACTOur president’s initial reaction on the Basilan Massacre was to blame our soldiers, he openly professes that he believes in MILF’s sincerity, to date, our government’s pronouncements are in the context of blaming our soldiers – FACTMILF has several factions; the leadership that met with our president has no full control over their members. – FACTHaving said these, I therefore conclude that the peace talk with the MILF is useless, our president is insincere and a weakling, the whole nation is being taken for a ride both by the president and the MILF.

all out justice is funny because one, it’s just a sugar-coated term for war. Again, civilians’ lives are messed up, lives of foot soldiers being sacrificed. it’s also funny because while we speak of justice, how come we are not rectifying the injustices we have done to our Muslim brothers and sisters, which actually are the root causes of the MILF’s rebellion. Armed violence is not the answer. We cannot just “pulverize” people and think justice is served and conflict will end. We have to go back to basics still: good governance, genuine reforms in our system that truly encompasses and benefits ALL, not just some dominant sectors.

Lot’s to talk about here.  I love the term “lawless elements”.  Do these people have a special uniform, name plate or ribbon to identify them as such?  Now the MILF says they are no longer on their rolls, seems like they keep better records than the Comelec does of valid voters.  Sorry MILF, there is no such thing as a perfect war, there will be causualties as long as folks are shooting at each other.  The tragedy is the regular folks who get killed and displaced from their homes and loved ones.  The other good comment was made by Gen Oban when asked about the use of chemical weapons, “We don’t use napalm”.  The complained of itchiness not being burned to a crisp.

If we demand that MILF should have control over their members; shouldn’t we also demand that our own armed forces also shape up? Dapat ayusin nila benefits ng mga foot soldiers, bigyan ng pabahay, maayos na sweldo. Most of all, itigil na ang korupsyon! Itigil na rin nila pagbebenta ng armas sa mga “kalaban” nila, tulad ng Abu Sayyaf at MILF.

Based on posts, the sane Mindanaoans despise the MILF.  What more can the government ask for?  That’s firsthand account.  It is the role of the gov’t to protect abused citizens of its jurisdiction.  Do not believe every word from MILF, from the mouth of Al Haq.  Crash them to pieces…put an end to the hardships in Mindanao…develop the region, give the children better education, enhance livelihood, create jobs, be there for the MIndanaoans!  That’s how we will achieve lasting peace.

PAF OV-10 made two sorties on Tuesday but no Bangsamoro casualties. Puro mintis. But MILF spokesperson is already complaining of the military using chemical weapons. Kasi daw nangangati yung kanilang leeg at buong katawan. Kaninong magaling idea ba yung ATS (area of temporary stay) na pinagtataguhan ng mga rebels? I think it is a stupid idea because it provides a safe place for the rebels to hide and shoot their weapons at the soldiers to boot. Naregaten ti byag gen.

I am confused.  The solders were killed in Basilan by members of MILF based in Basilan, why the military operations in Sibugay?

The MILF leadership has already owned up to the act.  They lied about the location being within their territory to justify the carnage.  PNoy seems displeased, to show his displeasure unleashes a barrage on his soldiers instead.  But did I miss him demanding an explanation from the MILF?

What Erap showed was that these elements can be crushed and all their camps can be wiped-out, after that the biggest mistake was the decision to give them 3 main camps and enter to another peace pact. …need to commend the AFP for making sure non-combatants are evacuated…it’s unfortunate that MILF is unable to guarantee compliance to agreements…and decided to test the country’s resolve….there should be security alert on all population centers like Manila, Davao, etc. to make sure lawless elements are unable to sow fear on the rest of the population…police should be on high alert…and citizens should be vigilant….while war is unfortunate…our willingness to fight is the only deterrent… God bless the country and the brave men and women who will keep it safe…

  • Anonymous

Hopefully, the airstrikes are the preliminary strategy before ground troops take over to do the mop up operations afterwards.  If there is no ground troops planned to do mop up operations to reach inside all nooks and crannies of the MILF “territory,” then the efforts are useless, a waste of time, efforts, ammos, fuel and supplies because air strikes alone cannot solve and achieve the goal of the actions done!  There should be no let up now until the objective is achieved, that is, all those responsible are captured or killed.  Any call for ceasefire now is counterproductive and should be avoided by all means possible.

PEACE is an abused word.  Tell me what is peace in Mindanao and I will tell you that the time, efforts and energies spent to entertain the exchange of dialogues between the government and the MILF and other dessident elements are just an exercise done by insane people who like to flatter themeselves into believing their name should be written in blood in the pages of history!  There has been no clear cut PEACE plan made for Mindanao, by either the MILF, ABUS, MNLF, or other rouge elements, etc. - only aimless rantings of those who wanted to get their hands inside a cookie jar!

When all these rouge elements are eliminated, then perhaps, we can arrange the table and chairs around it and invite all interested parties to talk about peace in that region!  When there are still armed elements present around that create havocs in Mindanao, there is no such thing as PEACE to talk about in that region!  Let the government panel UNDERSTAND this bare facts and stop being drawn into this votex of deception and chaos!

i believe, many will agree with me, except muslims  of course, that the most distrustful people in the philippines are these muslim rebels. i remember very vividly the advice given to me by an oldtimer in saudi when i first set my foot there as OFW wayback 1989, ”don’t trust these pilipino muslims in this offce-doble kara ang mga iyan. galing magsalita pero traydor. ingat ka”. he is 100% correct.

  • Anonymous

the assault may be a little bit late and on a limited scale, but to me, this is better that doing nothing.  perhaps, the government has reasons for doing so and they know better than i do. the bottomline is- keep these monsters out of our way. I have a suggestion to AFP, why not send pigs as frontliners in the battlefield-magtatakbuhan ang mga kalaban na bahag ang mga buntot.

  • Anonymous

If the MILF cries foul, let them understand that our priority at the moment is to capture or kill those responsible for the ambush of our military personnel.  After our objective of “justice” is achieved, then we can entertain their complaints.  Meanwhile, tell them to step aside while we do our job or else face the consequences of their interference and obstruction of “justice!”  Let the MILF understands who is the sovereign government of this country, the Philippines!

I do not want to throw wet towel to the seething bristling anger here against the MILF. But the current operation in Payao will not amount to anything. This is like the AFP throwing tantrums in a candy store because they want to have a cathartic effect on those who got angry with wht happened in Al Barkah. But this will amount to nothing. Our Armed Forces is so incompetent to effect a ground assualt in Payao. They lack the wherewithal to effect a ground assault that will eliminate the MILF in Payao. The only way they will succedd there is an all out assualt of some 2,000 foot soldiers something which the people in the area has not seen being mobilized.  And even with that number of troops the assualt will be bloody since the MILF can muster more than 1,000 armed men in this isalnd. Another thing they dont have the intelligence of the terrain of the island. The whole coastal area of Zamboanga Sibugay is populated by Muslims, from Tungawan to Ipil,   to the Bacalan Delta, Naga, Kabasalan, Siay, Olutanga, and the isalnd of Payao. Their volvo powered boats can easily outrun the Navy assets in Sibugay Gulf.  This air strikes will amount to nothing in the end tactically and strategically. I am sorry but it is about time the public must exert pressure on our Armef Forces to do better in Mindanao. They always get a free pass when the commit huge operational fiasco. I would like Gen Oban to illucidate in detail what is it they want to achieve in Payao now. Who they want to capture? What territory they want to capture? And Why they are doing this? Truth be told, there so many unserve Warrant of Arrests for individuals who are hinding in this island. Our AFP must be pressured by the public to do their utmost best at the boldest and safest fashion for our foot soldiers. Enough of useless careless death from our troops.

FVR did not believe in an all out war, you said?  Simple explanation.  First, FVR did not believe in himself he can do it!  40 years war not good?  Depends on what kind of war you are refering to!  If it is ”urong-sulong” no good results can be achieved!

An all out war cannot solve the problem?  Heard about what happened to Al qaeda?  To Saddam Hussain?  To Gadhafi?  To terrorism the USA had vowed to eliminate?  If that could not be solved by war, you think the USA would waste their logistics, personnel, arms, budgets, to go after rogue elements in the middle east?   If the USA did not go all out on Japan, Germany and Italy where would we be now?

Think of Sri Lanka’s LTTE (Tamil Tigers) of the recent past. The Tamil Tigers were pestering the Colombo government for quite a long time just like the Mindanao problem. Ceasefire here, war there became the de facto mood. One day the Tigers provoked the Colombo government into an all out war to somehow solicit international sympathy because they portray themselves as the downtrodden. Colombo obliged them. International cries of ceasefire, restraint, back to barracks fell on deaf ears and Colombo made good their promise of giving to the Tamil Tigers the mother of all battles. The rest is history. Now the Tamil survivors are just happy to till their land, co-exist with the rest of Sri Lankans in peace. Can we do the same in Mindanao? I think we can.

      • Anonymous

So was the rest of Sri Lanka affected by the tsunami. Haven’t you read about the big battles that the Colombo government brought to the Tamil Tigers in their own backyard? The Tigers really put up a good fight although they were overpowered by the sheer overwhelming numbers of the Colombo troops. All the Sri Lankan army resources were put to use as if there was no tomorrow. That was a do or die war for Colombo. My point is our authorities should and must be decisive, the AFP has its chance of redemption. Our country is a tiny one we can’t afford to let this gang-ho group divide it yet into smaller parts, can we?
