Dengue cases in Metro Manila up by 18.2 percent, says health dep’t

Dengue cases in the National Capital Region rose by 18.2 percent from January to Oct. 15 compared to the same period last year, the Center for Health Development-Metro Manila (CHD-MM) said on Thursday.

The latest data from the Department of Health’s regional epidemiology surveillance unit showed 21,695 dengue cases with 123 deaths compared to 18,349 cases with 117 deaths in 2010, according to CHD-MM regional director Dr. Eduardo Janairo.

The majority of the cases involved males aged 15 years old and below with 13,353 cases and 109 deaths.

The 10 cities with the highest number of cases were Quezon City (7,320); Manila (2,984); Caloocan City (2,368); Valenzuela City (1,321); Pasig City (1,098); Malabon City (937); Parañaque City (899); Taguig City (669); Muntinlupa City (622) and Pasay City (585).

Among hospitals, Philippine Children’s Medical Center recorded the biggest number of cases with 1,367 cases and 23 deaths followed by East Avenue Medical Center (529 cases and 7 deaths), MCU-FDT Medical Foundation Hospital (494 cases, 5 deaths), Dr. Jose Rodriguez Memorial Hospital (400 cases, 4 deaths), Rizal Medical Center (399 cases, 5 deaths), Valenzuela Medical Center (308 cases, 4 deaths), Ospital ng Makati (265 cases, 4 deaths), Fatima Medical Center (167 cases, 2 deaths) and Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (103 cases, 1 death).
