So where’s the ‘heart-wrenching’ part in Duterte’s Sona?

A DAY before President Duterte delivered his first State of the Nation Address (Sona), Communications Secretary Martin Andanar promised that it would stir up the patriot in every Filipino.

He even claimed that the speech, which was supposedly written by the President himself, made him cry.

But after the almost two-hour speech of the President on Monday, many people asked: where was the heart-wrenching part in the speech?

For the Communications Secretary, he said it was the firebrand President’s ad libs in his speech that made it more personal and touching.

“I think ad lib really made it more personal. The President himself, he has this magic touch with the masses,” Andanar told reporters following the President’s speech.

The Palace official said those who are receptive to Duterte’s almost two-hour speech will be those from the marginalized and poor Filipinos.

“Siguro kung hindi niyo na-appreciate sa loob ng halls of Congress, I am sure if you go and walk in the sidestreets and in the streets where our class C, D, E live, they appreciate what the President did kasi pinaintindi ng Presidente kung ano ang kanyang ibig sabihin doon sa State of the Nation [Address],” Andanar said.

Last Sunday, it was Andanar who claimed that Duterte’s speech was touching.

“When I read the speech, ayaw ko pong mag-exaggerate pero the first time I read the speech, it made me cry. Ganoon po kaganda, ganoon po ka makabagbag-damdamin iyong speech ng Pangulo natin,” Andanar told the media in Davao City.

Andanar said that the President’s address was supposed to last only 38 minutes but for a chief executive who has a habit of ditching his prepared speeches, the Sona ended up lasting one hour and 32 minutes.
