THE COMMISSION on Elections (Comelec) is eyeing the registration of voters for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls in the latter part of the month.
“Applications for registration will be from July 15 to 31,” said Comelec Commissioner Luie Guia in an interview.
Guia said the poll body would provide the same number of days for the filing of oppositions to any registrations.
“Aug. 1 to 15 will be the period to accept oppositions to applications and hearings,” he said.
Guia said the prolonged registration period may not be due to the proximity of the barangay and SK polls.
Under the law, the joint barangay and youth elections shall be held on the last Monday of October, which falls on Oct. 31.
Comelec Chair Andres Bautista earlier pushed the idea of postponing the next barangay and SK polls, citing the possibility of voters developing “election fatigue.”
Bautista was criticized by all six commissioners as a result of this proposition.
