‘Hooray for Hollywood’ on Taal Volcano Island

By

HOLLYWOOD, HOLY COW! This is how Taal Volcano would look from the Tagaytay ridge once a giant “Batangas” sign is put up on the island as approved by the Hollywood-inspired Batangas provincial government. The idea was conceived by movie star-Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto. PHOTO FROM THE OFFICE OF THE VICE GOVERNOR OF BATANGAS

BATANGAS CITY—It was something only a movie star could have conceived.

Why not put up a towering “Batangas” sign on Taal Volcano island similar to the “Hollywood” sign in Los Angeles, California?

The provincial council approved on October 5 a resolution supporting the idea of Governor Vilma Santos-Recto, the award-winning actress, to erect a hard-to-miss landmark and potential tourism draw, according to Vice Governor Mark Leviste II.

Emelie Katigbak, officer in charge of the Batangas tourism office, said floating restaurants or fish pens can be set up on Taal Lake in such a way that their layout would form the famous Batangueño expression “Ala Eh.”

It could be such a dazzling sight especially if lit up at night, she said.

14-meter letters

Leviste said the idea was based on the premise that the scenic volcano and the lake surrounding it “form the heart of Batangas. The geography of the province suggests that (they are) at the center of the province.”

Also, history had shown that Batangueños were blessed with rich and fertile agricultural lands thanks to the volcano’s past eruptions, he said.

He said the proposed sign would be painted white and positioned following the contours of the island volcano. The letters would be 14 meters tall and stretch for about 110 meters.

The font would be similar to that of the iconic Hollywood signage, the official added.

“It is not an out-of-this-world concept. It’s a simple development which can easily attract attention and even visitors to the area,” Leviste said.

Identity crisis

Leviste said the signage would help establish the identity of the lake and volcano as part of Batangas—and not of Tagaytay City, which lies within the neighboring province of Cavite.

He said the volcano was often mistakenly identified as part of Tagaytay, a mountain resort city which offers a picturesque view of Taal.

In a text message, Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham Tolentino maintained that the city had never laid claim to either the lake or the volcano.

“However, the best view of Taal Volcano is from the ridge of Tagaytay City where the best photos are shot, the best hotels and restaurants are found and the perfect weather is felt,” Tolentino said.

“Thank God, He created the volcano in Batangas so that Tagaytay will have the best view,” the mayor said.

‘But why?’

Tolentino, however, questioned the Hollywood-inspired design for the island, flatly saying: “Why put up a Batangas sign? It won’t help.”

“People, while sipping a cup of coffee, will just say that the view is more beautiful from Tagaytay without that sign,” Tolentino said with a hint of a warning.

Expect a “global reaction” once that plan pushes through, he said.

“It’s a sign of what? Bicolanos will not put an ‘Albay’ (sign) on Mayon Volcano. (Their officials) would not destroy the view of Mayon. They are not insecure,” Tolentino said.

    COSTS:

Tangible Cost: To erect the sign, I will invite you readers to be my guest for your cost input. Please add to that the amount of labor, materials, transportation costs every year for the year-long maintenance of the structure. I would hazard a guess that the cost to erect the sign and maintain it at least twice yearly , such as removing the paint, sanding it to near-smooth finish and repainting the whole structure including the sign exceeds the perceived benefit.

Because Taal volcano spits out corrosive emission of sulphur, the structure requires special steel and special paint that are very expensive.

Intangible Cost: The cost to the environment brought about by the clearing and disappearance of the trees and bushes in and around the perimeter of the structure, is monumental (no pun intended).
BENEFITS: There are no available data within which to make an empirical study on the benefits of such a structure on tourism. Whatever was claimed to date is purely speculative. Hence, for cost-benefit analysis, the equation appears to be open ended.

It would appear, then, that a more practical alternative to bringing more tourists to Batangas is the installation of more directional and informational road signs to direct the tourists to the beautiful, natural or man-made resorts and leisure and fun areas, historical landmarks, vintage houses, antique churches, etc. Signs installed every 1/2 kilometer in Batangas would be most appreciated by tourists travelling on improved and well-maintained roads who reach their intended destinations worry free.

These tourists, in turn, who experiened nothing but pleasure and leisure would be Batangas’ natural and free promoters to their relatives and friends.

Okey. To the provincial government of Batangas. Although a lot of them make sense, let’s forget for a minute the criticisms and perceived attacks on the proposed signage.

Here’s my humble input for your “study” of the proposal to erect a 14-meter high BATANGAS sign on the contour of Taal volcano to help you in reconsidering your position.

DIMENSION: I drew the 8 letters of BATANGAS, on a scale of 1 cm. to 1 M, and found out that to make it aesthetically pleasing, each letter would have to have a dimension of 14M high x 10M wide. Eight letters in BATANGAS multiplied by 10M each is 80 meters in total. Add to the whole stretch between 2.5M to 3M spacing between the letters: 7 spaces multiplied by 3M equals 21 meters.
Therefore, the whole stretch has a total of between 101 meters to 105 meters.

To prop it up would require a base made of concrete and steel approx. 120 meters long x 6 meters high x 5 meters deep, very conservatively. However, I’m not sure if this base would be structurally sound so as to support the weight of the structure. But for now, let’s accept that it is.

The whole structure resembling a honeycomb of steel that will support the 14 meters x 105 meters of BATANGAS letters, also made of steel (to withstand the force and energy of the elements) will have a dimension, approximately, of 20 meters x 110 meters, with hundreds of guy cables made of stranded steel attached to the front and back of the letters for stability.

ENVIRONMENTAL: To build the concrete base, a swath of hundreds of trees and shrubs home to native birds, insects, butterflies, frogs and other flora and fauna will have to be cleared. Those animals, birds and flora and fauna will eventually die and be extinct as their natural habitat will shrink by the amount of clearing, and will have to compete with others to live on a reduced habitat.

Also, there will be another volume of trees and shrubs that will be cut and cleared where the guy cables will be anchored on.

I don’t think that putting signage is necessary. It will just be a waste of money, effort, time and will destroy the habitat of different flora and fauna. There are more ways to enhance the tourism of a place like improving the facilities that includes more affordable hotels, cheap yet high-class restaurants, providing more cell sites and modes of transportation and even hospitals. We should not limit the criteria of being a top-grossing tourist spot by the physical aspects. We should remember that tourists go there to see the view and to experience something new.

You have the beauty of the natural volcanic mountains NOW DON’T DESTROY IT LIKE YOUR FORESTS and have nothing left but a few palm trees and mango trees all arranged in little rows

sa tingin ko lang po: The cost of putting up that project might equate the cost of a small library with new books that is to be operated for the community for free access.

THIS HAS GOT TO BE A REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD JOKE.

IS SHE INSANE? STUPID?  I have always gone to tagaytay because it is very beautiful there, the view of this volcano have ALWAYS given me some sort of peace, that I have arrived at the destination.  The view of this volcano has always left me in a place of wonder cos it is just a simple but magnificent view.

AND NOW SHE IS GOING TO PUT A STUPID SIGN ON IT???????  Cant anyone stop her?  We already have Photoshop and all photo editing apps to put the words “BATANGAS” on ANY part of the picture whenever we take one of this Taal Volcano,  BUT NEVER PUT IT ON THE VOLCANO!!!!!!

ALL THE PEOPLE WHO GOES THERE KNOWS IT IS IN BATANGAS, AND IT IS CALLED TAAL, SO WHY REMIND US?  IS SHE MAKING FUN OF US? SHE IS DUMBING US?  FOREIGNERS WHO COMES THERE KNOWS THE HISTORY OF THIS PROVINCE AND VOLCANO, NO NEED TO MAKE THEM AVOID THIS DESTINATION BECAUSE IT IS UGLY-FIED BY THE “BATANGAS SIGN”!!!

IT IS REALLY HARD TO IMAGINE THAT UGLY-FYING A MONEY MAKING VIEW IS JUST A POOR EXCUSE TO GET SOME MONEY FROM THE FUNDING OUT OF IT.  I know the tricks of government people, and they are ALL the same, be it Vilma Santos or some other small or big name official.
