Northern Nicaragua rattled by 6.1 magnitude quake

MANAGUA, Nicaragua — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 shook the northwestern coast of Nicaragua Thursday not far from the Honduran border.

The U.S. Geological survey said the quake’s epicenter was 26 kilometers (16 miles) northeast of Chinandega, Nicaragua.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The USGS said it had a depth of 10 kilometers and struck late Thursday night.

The quake was felt strongly in Nicaragua’s capital, Managua.

The newspaper La Prensa reported that the walls of a church had collapsed in Chinandega, the city closest to the epicenter.
