Did presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte go too far in his recent statement about a victim of rape?

In a viral video posted on YouTube by user “Beatboxer ng Pinas,” Duterte, who was onstage during a campaign rally, narrated a rape incident about an Australian missionary.

“Nirape nilang lahat ng mga babae so ‘yung unang asolte, kasi nagretreat sila, naiwan yung ginawa nilang cover, ang isa doon yung lay minister na Australyana. Tsk, problema na ito…Pag labas, edi binalot. Tinignan ko yung mukha, t*** i** parang si… parang artista sa Amerika na maganda,” Duterte said.

(All the women there were raped in the first assault and they retreated but the bodies the attackers used remained there, one of which was the body of an Australian lay minister. Tsk, this is a problem… The body was brought outside and it was covered. I looked at her face, son of a b****… she looked like a beautiful actress in the United States.)

“P***** i**, sayang ito. Ang nagpasok sa isip ko, nirape nila, pinagpilahan nila doon. Nagalit ako kasi nirape? Oo, isa rin ‘yun . Pero napakaganda, dapat ang mayor muna ang mauna. Sayang,” he added.

(Son of a b****, what a waste. I was thinking that they raped her and lined up. I was angry because she was raped, that’s one thing. But she was so beautiful, the mayor should have been first, what a waste.)

The viral one-minute video was part of the full length video posted on the Facebook Page CinEmotion Digital Films. The video, however, has been taken down as of press time.

In a more than one hour video posted by KyleIsAwesome on YouTube, Duterte mentioned the “Pugoy” hostage-taking incident.

The tough-talking mayor was referring to the 1989 hostage by Felipe Pugoy, an inmate of the Davao City Police Office.

During that time, missionaries who frequently visited the jail to preach were taken hostages by prisoners led by Pugoy.

Prisoners and some of the hostages were killed after the police stormed the city jail.

Among those killed was Australian lay missioner Jaqueline Hamill who was 36 years old that time.

Duterte earned the ire of netizens for his rape joke.

YouTube user Norie Bordaror said Duterte doesn’t have respect for women.

“My God! Walang respeto sa ating mga babae (He has no respect for us women)!,” Bordador said.

Another netizen Lea Schmea described the mayor’s statement as disgusting.

Ryan Mendoza said “rape is not a funny joke,” citing the trauma victims have to undergo after the incident.

Ezekiel Franco, meanwhile, slammed Duterte for his platform against crime, yet he easily jokes about rape.
