Storm surge warning

ANOTHER  “Pedring”-like storm surge may spill floodwaters not only onto Roxas Boulevard but to as far away as Taft Avenue, an official of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority  warned on Friday. Following the destruction of a portion of the 1.8 km seawall, MMDA Deputy General Manager for Operations Emerson Carlos said Manila, at the moment, has little protection against waters that may rush in from the bay in the event of a storm as intense as Pedring. At  the Communication and News Exchange Forum organized by the Philippine Information Agency yesterday, Carlos pointed out that sandbags had been placed as a temporary barrier in place of the broken seawall, but these would be inadequate if another storm surge were to occur.  The government’s P30-million  Roxas Boulevard Seawall Promenade Project  is seen to provide twice the protection, Carlos said. “The first layer will serve as the breakwater, so that when water spills over to the next layer, the impact will be less,” he said.
