Baguio City might not get cooler due to El Niño
Baguio City’s temperature dropped to its lowest since the northeast monsoon started in October with 10.8 degrees Celsius last Tuesday, but it might not get any lower as in previous years due to the prevailing El Niño.
Panahon.TV said in its daily news program on Thursday that the El Niño phenomenon may be the reason why Baguio City’s temperature was not as cool as in the past.
El Niño is the unusual warming of surface ocean waters in the Pacific Ocean. It causes drought and increases temperature and extreme weather patterns.
The lowest temperature ever recorded in Baguio City was at 6.3 degrees Celsius on Jan. 18, 1961, the report said.
In recent years, a temperature of 8.1 degrees Celsius was recorded on Jan. 12, 2014.
The state weather bureau said that this year’s El Niño may be the strongest one yet.
Climate data also showed that 2015 was the hottest year on record.
