Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos has called on fellow aspirants in the upcoming national elections to extend the “ceasefire of mudslinging and character assassination” that they had observed during the holidays for the entire campaign period.

Marcos, who is seeking the vice presidency, said on Saturday that aspirants should focus on pressing national issues and how they would address them.

“Now and during the campaign period, we candidates should present to the electorate discourses, speeches, and statements that are issue-based and in a dignified and decent manner,” Marcos, the declared running-mate of Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, said in a statement.

“Well, we have done it. I can’t see any reason why it could not be done during the entire campaign period. The people are waiting to hear solutions to the lingering problems of the country and it should be given to them. It would be an insult to their intelligence if this is sidelined by non-sense quarrels,” he added.

The past year saw heated exchanges between rivals, particularly those seeking top national posts, which even led to dares of a slapping match and a gun duel. IDL
