Adopting the grassroots leadership style of the late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, Liberal Party’s vice presidential bet, Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo, vowed to push for a monthly allowance for barangay (village) workers should she win the national elections next year.

Robredo, who is running with administration’s presidential bet Mar Roxas, said she would push for a minimum of P2,000 monthly allowance for volunteer workers in the grassroots.

“Naiintindihan po natin na ang ating barangay volunteer workers ay ang pinaka grabe ang trabaho, pero kaunti lang ang benepisyo na nakukuha,” Robredo said in an ambush interview in Butuan City on Wednesday.

Aside from financial support, Robredo said she will also push for their other benefits like scholarship for their children, PhilHealth coverage, and access to micro-finance for those who will put up a business.

For elderly workers who have served for a long time in the barangay, Robredo plans to give them monthly pensions.

“Para pagpapasalamat na ito ng gobyerno sa lahat ng mga panahon at taong ginugol nila sa paninilbihan sa barangay,” she said.

“Sana po maipasa na ang panukalang batas natin, para po ang ating mga barangay volunteer workers medyo tahimik na din, na hindi poproblemahin ang kanilang pambili ng gamot at iyong kanilang pang kain sa araw-araw,” she added.

From the day she accepted the challenge to run for vice president, Robredo promised to focus on improving the lives of those in the grassroots sector. TVJ
