Col. Roseller Murillo, commander of the Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade, said Saturday the latest attack on power pylons of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) took place in Karomatan Matampay here.

He said two of the bases of NGCP’s Steel Tower 13 were damaged when an improvised explosive devices planted by still unidentified men went off Friday evening.

“The steel post was not toppled and still on its upright position,” he said.

Eugene Bicar, head of NGCP’s Mindanao System Operations, said the Friday evening’s incident failed to cut off power.

However, last October 29, improvised explosive devices toppled steel towers 19 and 20 in Barangay (village) Sugod here, causing power outages in some areas, he said.

Chief Insp. Parson Asadil, Marawi City acting police chief, said the identities of the culprits were still being determined but the police were looking for extortion as the motive for the attacks.

Elizabeth Ladaga, NGCP corporate communications officer, said they had coordinated with the police and the military to safeguard power pylons as more attacks could jeopardize the supply of electricity in Mindanao.

“Because of Mindanao’s current power situation, the isolation of any power plant from the grid may result in more load curtailment during peak hours,” she said. RAM
