Senator Alan Peter Cayetano welcomed Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo’s bid to run for vice president.

“The more candidates, the better,” he told reporters on Monday at the sidelines of the World Teachers’ Day at Cuneta Astrodome.

On the same day, Leni Robredo was introduced at Club Filipino in Greenhills as the running mate of former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, the administration’s presidential bet for the elections next year.

Robredo, the widow of Jesse Robredo a former interior secretary who died in a plane crash three years ago, had been wooed by the administration for several months to convince her to run.

Presidential and vice presidential aspirants

Recently, there have been several presidential and vice presidential hopefuls who have announced their bids.

Last month, Sen. Grace Poe and Sen. Francis Escudero announced their team-up in the presidential and vice presidential races.

Cayetano announced his vice presidential bid last week, while Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV has also expressed his intention to run for vice president as an independent candidate.

“We won’t allow our candidacy to affect our work… We’re focused and dedicated (to finish our) work,” he said.

Both Cayetano and Trillanes are from the Nacionalista Party (NP).

Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, another member of the NP, is also reportedly eyeing the vice presidential post, but he has yet to make an announcement.

“Mabuti mabuo yung tandems ng maaga. From personality politics, mapunta tayo sa plataporma, vision, and track record (It’s good that the tandems are formed early on. From personality politics, we are now looking at their platform, vision, and track record),” Cayetano said.

He said all vice presidential candidates are “formidable.”

“Anyone from a major political party will be formidable,” he said.

“I always look at myself as the biggest opponent. Hindi mo naman alam sino ang makakalaban mo eh. Sino ang mas magaling , mas masipag, mas magandang ideas (You don’t know who you’ll be up against; who is better, is more hard-working, has better ideas),” he said. JE
