Fire destroys 30 houses, kills 11 pigs in Bacolod City

bacolod-cityBACOLOD CITY, Philippines—A fire destroyed 30 houses and burned more than 11 pigs in Purok Lampirong, Barangay 2, Bacolod City, at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, Barangay 2 Captain Victor Aliguen, said.

City fire marshal Senior Insp. Publio Ploteña said the cause of the fire was yet to be determined.

Initial investigation by the Bacolod Bureau of Fire Protection said the fire started from the house of Crizelda Brezuela.

The houses destroyed were made of light materials.

Several residents suffered from minor injuries as they were escaping from the fire.

The fire killed more than 11 pigs, others were seriously injured while others survived by jumping into a nearby river.

Many residents wept at the loss of their pigs, while some rushed their burned and dying pigs to the slaughterhouse to try to salvage their losses.

Residents of Purok Lampirong raise pigs, drive tricycles and operate sarisari (variety) stores for their livelihood.

Aliguen said calamity funds would be released to assist the fire victims who are temporarily being housed at the Andres Bonifacio Elementary School and the Barangay 2 Hall. TVJ
