FDA: Poisonous durian candies contaminated with bacteria
THE durian-flavored candies that poisoned around 2,000 people—mostly children—in the Caraga region last week were contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Thursday.
Citing laboratory results, FDA acting deputy director general Ma. Lourdes Santiago said in a press briefing that the bacteria might have been caused by mishandling in production.
Santiago said the bacteria may be found in human skin, hair, and other parts of the body.

Department of Health (DOH) Secretary Janette Garin underscored the importance of proper hygiene in food production.
In an earlier advisory, DFA and DOH warned consumers of purchasing durian candies with the brand “Wendy’s,” the alleged manufacturer of the poisonous products.
Manufacturing activities of Wendy’s Durian Candies were ordered suspended by the Davao City government after finding out that it was not licensed with DFA.

DOH also urged the public to be extra careful with what they eat, noting the importance of checking expiry dates.
