KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Most domestic violence cases against women are the result of men thinking too highly of themselves, says a Shari’a lawyer.

Tengku Dr. Naufal Tengku Mansor said most women were taken advantage of because of a flawed concept where women are regarded as weak, unable to defend or make decisions for themselves.

This perception had single-handedly caused the steady rise in domestic violence against women, with 3,673 cases recorded, according to the latest figure up to September 2014. In 2010, 3,173 cases were recorded by police and this number shot up to 4,123 in 2013.
