Boy needs liver transplant

Intensive Care Corner

AMERNA

MANILA, Philippines–Despite a stable job that provides her with a steady source of income, Maricel Amerna—a bank employee and mother of two-year-old Azel Miguel Amerna who suffers from biliary atresia—knows that she and her husband will not be able to provide their son with the health care he needs on their own.

“It is one of the most difficult and expensive ailment there is because we have to raise around P4 million for a liver transplant in Taiwan,” Amerna told the Inquirer.

Azel Miguel was diagnosed with “inguinal hernia” when he was two months old. After three liver biopsies at the Philippine General Hospital, the results indicated two possibilities: The bile duct between his liver and small intestine is either blocked or absent. As a result, he also suffers from jaundice.

“Inasmuch as we want to carry our own burden, our financial capabilities are  limited. It is for this reason that we are appealing to you for help so that we will pass this giant test of our faith. We are hopeful that God will use you as a channel of blessing to help us get through this,” said the boy’s father, Ferdinand Amerna, a pastor in Dasmarinas City, Cavite, where the family lives.

Azel Miguel is scheduled for a liver transplant in a Taiwanese hospital as soon as his father is cleared to be a donor.

The couple can be reached at 0917-5921835 or 0917-7190247. For donations, Maricel’s BDO  bank account number is 482-014185-9.
