In photos: WHO breastfeeding drive at Fabella Hospital
MANILA, Philippines— The World Health Organization (WHO) stressed the importance and benefits of breastfeeding through the program “Unang Yakap” in a tour at the Fabella Hospital in Manila on Wednesday.
Unang Yakap or First Embrace is the campaign of the Department of Health (DOH) in cooperation with WHO to adopt and embrace the safe and quality care for birthing mothers and their newborns.
Dr. Howard Sobel, coordinator for reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health of the WHO led the information drive among breastfeeding mothers at the Fabella Hospital.
Sobel said the campaign “really all started in the Philippines” particularly at the Fabella hospital, which has a milk banking facility.
Speaking to breastfeeding mothers, Sobel showed the importance of breastfeeding to avoid the high mortality rate among newborn babies.
According to the WHO, breastfeeding leads to lower neonatal mortality rates in developing countries.
