More than 100,000 evacuated in 4 flood-hit states in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR — The number of people evacuated in the four flood-hit states of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Perak stood at 103,649 Friday morning, with Pahang seeing a sudden rise in the number of evacuees and Kelantan, a slight drop.

Pahang saw a drastic rise in the number of evacuees to 35,736 from the 28,578 Thursday night.

The total number of evacuees in the state involved 9,094 families in eight districts, said a spokesman of the Pahang Police flood operations room.

Kuantan district had the highest number of evacuees – 19,924 from 5,343 families, all housed at 44 relief centers.

Jerantut district had 4,723 evacuees; Lipis, 2,763; Maran, 2,711; Temerloh, 2,661; Pekan, 2,266; Rompin, 411 and Bera, 277.

In Kelantan, the number of evacuees dropped slightly to 32,139 from 34,955 Thursday night after the situation saw an improvement in six districts.

The number of evacuees in the Kota Baru district dropped to 1,198 from 3,231; Tanah Merah, to 3,546 from 3,840; Pasir Mas, to 6,379 from 7,237; Gua Musang, to 5,150 from 7,385; Tumpat, to 5,005 from 5,803; and Pasir Puteh, to 192 from 193.

However, the situation in three other districts worsened.

Kuala Krai saw an increase in the number of evacuees, to 5,200 from 4,864; Machang, to 4,039 from 1,133 and Jeli, to 1,430 from 1,269.

In Terengganu, there was an increase in the number of evacuees, to 30,147 from 29,082.

The Terengganu National Security Council (NSC) portal reported that the Kemaman district was the worst affected, with 20,679 evacuated to 46 relief centers.

Dungun district had 7,314 evacuees; Kuala Terengganu, 1,551; Besut, 317 and Hulu Terengganu, 286.

The floodwaters in the Marang and Setiu district have receded.

In Perak, the number of evacuees in the Kuala Kangsar, Hulu Perak and Perak Tengah districts rose to 5,530 from 5,512.

A spokesman of the Perak NSC said Kuala Kangsar district, which also covered Sungai Siput, recorded the highest number of evacuees – 2,558 people from 621 families. They are being housed at 47 relief centers, he added.

In Kedah, the floods have forced the evacuation of 157 people from 31 families in the Padang Terap and Bandar Baharu districts.

Kedah NSC assistant secretary (military) Maj Mohd Radzi Abd Hamid said the evacuees were being accommodated at four relief centers.

In Perlis, the situation in the flood-hit areas had improved, leaving only 263 people from five villages at four relief centers as of 10a.m.

A spokesman of the Perlis NSC said the evacuees were from Kampung Paya, Lembah Biak, Padang Malau, Abi and Sena Rendang in the Padang Besar parliamentary constituency. – Bernama
