MANILA, Philippines—A prisoner who escaped from New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City in 2000 and tagged as a frustrated homicide suspect in 2004 was captured in Lagonoy, Camarines Sur province, early Tuesday morning.

Noel Savilla, 58, was sleeping alone in his house in the coastal village of Mapid when arrested at 12:45 a.m. Savilla lived as a fisherman in the remote village after escaping from prison on June 25, 2000, said Senior Supt. Rolito Orosco, Lagonoy police chief.

He was convicted for murder in the 1990s and, after his escape, was linked to two cases of frustrated homicide in Lagonoy and neighboring San Jose town in 2004, Orosco said.

The arresting team came with a “request for apprehension” signed by then Bureau of Corrections Director Pedro Sistoza and arrest warrants issued by Judge Ricky Begino of the Lagonogy Municipal Trial Court Judge Alfredo Cabral of San Jose Trial Court.
