Raps eyed vs power plant operator over oil spill in Pangasinan town
MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Coast Guard said Tuesday that it will file charges against Team Energy, the operator of the Sual power plant, after a ruptured pipeline spilled 4,000 liters of oil at the Cabalitian Bay in Sual town, Pangasinan province.
A local milkfish (bangus) industry thrives in the said town.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook account, the Coast Guard said that 20 drums of heavy fuel oil spilled at 2:23 a.m. Monday.
The spill “rapidly spread and reached the shoreline of Barangay (village) Pangascasan.”
The Coast Guard coordinated with the local government of Sual town to further assess the damage brought by the oil leak to the environment.
The Sual power plant is the largest coal-fired plant in the country with a generating capacity of 1,218 megawatts. It began its operations in 1999.
