MANILA, Philippines – Manila Archbishop Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle returned to Manila Friday from a bishops’ synod in the Vatican, saying he had good news for Filipino Catholics.

Tagle, who was accompanied by Archbishop Guiseppe Pinto, the papal nuncio to the Philippines, said he was reserving disclosure of the “good news” for a press conference on Thursday, October 30.

Tagle attended the recently concluded “Extraordinary Synod on the Family” from October 5 to 19. The gathering of bishops was the first part of a two-stage synod, in which topics related to the family and evangelization were discussed.

Tagle was one of three presidents of the synod, along with Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois of Paris and Cardinal Raymundo Assis of Aparecida, Brazil.

The second part of the synod, a larger assembly of bishops, is scheduled in October 2015.

Tagle went to Rome also to discuss with Vatican officials the preparations for the five-day visit of Pope Francis to the Philippines next January.

When met by reporters at the airport, Tagle, refused to discuss the upcoming papal visit and the synod, saying only: “Please come to our press briefing on October 30. We have an announcement to make.”
