MANILA, Philippines—The University of the Philippines has asked the Supreme Court to stop the Quezon City government from auctioning off the UP-Ayala Land Technohub property to answer for its P117-million real estate tax due.

In its petition, UP through the Office of the Solicitor General said the state university is exempt from real estate tax based on Section 25 of Republic Act 9500 or the university’s charter.

Section 25 provides that revenues and assets of the university are exempt from all taxes and duties.

“This exemption applies to UPs properties whether used for educational purposes or in support thereof,” the petition stated.

The petition was filed at the Supreme Court following a letter sent by the local government of Quezon City to the university saying it will be auctioned to answer for the P117-million real estate tax due.

The UP-Ayala Land Technohub was developed as an information technology hub and a part of the larger science and technology park located along Commonwealth Avenue.
