MANILA, Philippines—The string of charges filed against Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Alan Purisima is a clear effort to malign and tarnish the name of the organization, the PNP spokesperson said on Tuesday.

“These are definitely action aimed at destroying and maligning the PNP organization,” Chief Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac, PNP Public Information Office chief, said in a briefing.

On Monday, the Coalition of Filipino Consumers filed plunder, indirect bribery and graft charges against Purisima in relation to his alleged hidden mansion in Nueva Ecija, the alleged P25-million reconstruction of his “White House” in Crame, and his P100-million purportedly spurious licensing contract.

“Definitely, the one who’s doing this knows that he was out and that he would not have the chance to immediately respond. The timing was very off,” Sindac said.‎

Purisima left for Bogota, Colombia on Monday for an anti-kidnapping and anti-extortion conference which will last until September 26.

“The PNP chief will face this in the right time, in the proper venue and in a proper forum,” Sindac added.

‎But he said, the PNP is looking at its legal options and might consider filing counter charges against the accuser.

‎”It is their right to bring this case to the court and that is our right also,” he said.

While several groups have already called for Purisima’s resignation over the recent spate of brazen crimes especially those involving his men, Sindac added that ‎like a father, the PNP chief does not want to drag the entire police force into the controversies he is facing.

“Walang pinuno ang nagnanais na madamay ang organization ang kanyang pinamumunuan tulad ng isang ama rin na ayaw niyang madadamay ang pamilya sa kahit anumang pangyayare sa buhay niya,” he added.

(Just like a father protective of his family, no leader wants the organization he is heading to be involved in the controversies hounding him.)
