Slow magma movement shows ‘lessening’ of Mayon’s activity—Phivolcs
LEGAZPI CITY, Albay — The extrusion of magma by Mayon Volcano has slowed down as shown by the past 24-hour observation of the volcano, which indicates a “lessening of its activity,” a volcanologist here said Friday.

Eduardo Laguerta, resident volcanologist of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) at the Lignon Hill observatory here, said its seismic instruments recorded 22 volcanic quakes and 70 rockfall events during the past 24 hours.
“The activity of Mayon has lessened, particularly if we compare it with yesterday (Thursday) when we recorded 142 volcanic quakes and 251 rockfalls,” he said.
Laguerta said “these movements,” referring to the volcanic quakes and rockfalls, are the parameters on the movement of magma.
He said, however, the possibility of hazardous eruption remains despite the slowing down of magma extrusion.
“In the history of Mayon, once the lava dome has been noted at the surface, it will erupt,” he added.
Alert level 3 was raised over Mayon on Monday night.
