Palace doubts soldiers demoralized over gov’t’s treatment of Palparan

MANILA, Philippines – It is not true that soldiers, especially those involved in the anti-communist campaign, are demoralized over the government’s treatment of retired Maj. Gen. Jovito Palparan after his arrest, Malacañang said Tuesday.
“Yung aspeto ng morale ng foot soldiers ay binibigyang atensyon ng pamahalaan,” Communications Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma Jr. said during a Palace press briefing.
(The government is giving attention to the morale of foot soldiers.)
He said the military addresses both the morale and welfare of soldiers.
“Bagamat may mga pananaw sila na pulitikal kinakailangan nilang tumalima sa chain-of-command,” he added.
(Although they have political beliefs, they also need to follow the chain-of-command.)
Palparan was arrested last week, after going into hiding for three years, and is facing kidnapping and serious illegal detention charges in connection with the disappearance of two University of the Philippines (UP) students Karen Empeño and Sheryl Cadapan.
