Pagasa seeks larger 2015 budget after ‘Yolanda’

MANILA, Philippines — The country’s state weather bureau has proposed a larger budget for 2015 in light of the country’s experience with super typhoon “Yolanda” (international name: Haiyan), the world’s strongest typhoon to hit land.
During the budget briefing of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) at the House of Representatives on Monday, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) administrator Vic Malano said the increase in the budget would be spent for radars as well as communication facilities.
“The increase is because of the new equipment to be bought such as radars and communication facilities,” Malano said in Filipino
He said at least P300 million would be spent for radars while P1.8 million for communication facilities.
In a presentation, the DOST said Pagasa seeks a P3.464-billion budget in 2015, or up 176 percent from the P1.256 billion budget in 2014.
“Yolanda,” which flattened coastal cities in a storm surge, has claimed over 6,000 lives when it ravaged Central Philippines in November 2013.
