DOJ subpoenas 17 hazing suspects

MANILA, Philippines–The Department of Justice (DOJ) has ordered 17 suspects in the fatal hazing of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde student Guillo Cesar Servando to attend the preliminary investigation set at 10 a.m. on July 31 and Aug. 7.
The three-man panel composed of State Prosecutors Stewart Allan Mariano, Arnold Magpantay and Alejandro Daguiso sent subpoenas on Thursday to the suspects, mostly members of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity.
They were identified as Cody Errol Morales, Daniel Paul Martin Bautista, Kurt Michael Almazan, Luis Solomon Arevalo, Carl Francis Loresca, Esmerson Nathaniel Calupas, Hans Killian Tatlonghari, Jomar Pajarito, Eleazar Pablico III, John Kevin Navoa, Vic Angelo Dy, Mark Ramos, Mike Castañeda, Justin Francis Reyes, Steve Jorge Peñano, Ma. Teresa Dayanghirang and Alyssa Federique Valbuena.
They were among the 20 suspects charged with violating Republic Act No. 8049, or the 1995 Anti-Hazing Act, by Servando’s father, Aurelio, and the National Bureau of Investigation.
The other suspects known only as Kiko and “Bea” and one Jane Doe would be subpoenaed later once they are identified in the course of the hearings.
The DOJ earlier issued a lookout bulletin order so that the Bureau of Immigration may monitor the movements of the 20 suspects, four of whom—Navoa, Calupas, Tatlonghari and Pablico—were found to have left the country days after the hazing incident.
Arevalo and Almazan were provisionally admitted to the government’s witness protection program after they gave themselves up.
The 18-year-old Servando died after he underwent initiation rites on June 28 in a house in Makati City.
