ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – Around 200 families were forced to leave their homes in the village of Sangali at around 5 p.m. Thursday as floodwater had been rising due to heavy rain.

Elmer Apolinario, assistant city administrator, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer by phone that a sudden downpour caused a flashflood, submerging parts of Sangali to waist-deep water.

Four houses were reportedly swept away by rampaging water. He said the floodwater that flowed down to Sangali came from the mountainous parts of Bunguiao.

Apolinario said if the rain continued, the nearby river would swell, bringing in more flood, before midnight.

Maria Socorro Rojas, the city social welfare officer, said some 60 families have been staying at the village’s covered basketball court.
