Father of Benilde student killed in hazing cries out for justice

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The father of a De La Salle University-College of Saint Benilde student who was killed in fraternity hazing rites in Manila Saturday, is calling for justice.
Student Guillo Cesar Servando was found unconscious with three other students in a condominium unit at One Archer’s Place on Taft Avenue, Manila, Saturday evening, Chief Inspector Erwin Margarejo, the Manila Police District spokesperson, said. The students said they underwent initiation rites at an undisclosed place on Saturday afternoon and they got back to the condominium unit at about 9:30 p.m. the same day.
Servando, a second year BS Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management student, fell on the floor unconscious prompting one of his companions, John Raval, to call Patrol 117, reports from Manila said.
Servando’s father, Aurelio Cesar “Taboy” Jalbuena Servando, a human rights advocate from Bacolod and a businessman, told the Daily Star last night, they would like to see justice served.
The victim’s mother is Christine Uytiepo Servando. The father said they were waiting to hear what his son’s companions who were in a hospital intensive care unit on Monday, had to say. Word that his son had joined a fraternity came as a surprise to him, he said. He said President Aquino had ordered swift action in solving the death of his son and Vice President Jejomar Binay met with him to inquire about the case.
His son’s remains were at La Salle Greenhills on Monday and will be cremated on Wednesday. Aurelio Servando said they might bring his son’s cremated remains back to Bacolod for burial at a later date.
