Benilde vows cooperation in probing student’s hazing death
MANILA, Philippines — The De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde on Sunday reiterated what it said was its “prohibition” of fraternities and fraternity-related violence after the demise of one of their students and the injuries to three others allegedly due to hazing.
In a statement posted on its Facebook page, the College said it would “continue to fully cooperate” with the police as they investigate the “deplorable incident.”
According to the police, guards assigned at the One Archers Place on Taft Ave. had thought Guillo Cesar Servando, a hotel and restaurant management sophomore of the college, and three others were drunk when they arrived in Unit 2907 at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Around 11 p.m., an ambulance arrived responding to a call for help from the unit, and when the guards allowed medical personnel entry, they found Servando and the three students filled with bruises in the back, according to authorities.
Servando was dead on arrival in the hospital, while the three were rushed to the Philippine General Hospital.
Although the police did not conclusively say that Servando was killed and the three others were injured due to hazing, the college concluded that this was indeed the case.
“This is a time of great sadness as De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde mourns the demise of one of our students and prays for the recovery of the other students who are also victims of a recent fraternity hazing incident,” it said.
It said the Benildean community “(sent) its prayers to the students’ families and friends.”
“During this difficult time, Benilde responds with utmost respect and deference to all who are affected and enjoins everyone to respect the privacy of the families,” it said.
The statement was typewritten on paper with the college letterhead.
At the bottom left of the paper, the name Robin Serrano, vice chancellor for development and institutional relations, was written.
