Metro Manila sizzles on Labor Day

MANILA, Philippines—Metro Manila sizzled Thursday as the mercury soared to 36.4 degrees Celsius, the national capital region’s highest thus far in 2014, the state weather bureau said.
As militant workers marched in the streets to commemorate Labor Day, temperature rose with its 3 p.m. peak nearly breaking last year’s 36.6 degrees Celsius recorded on April 19, 2013, said Aldczar Aurelio of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
But the all-time high record in Metro Manila was recorded on May 14, 1987 at 38.5 degrees Celsius.
For the entire country, the hottest this year thus far was recorded in Tuguegarao City in Cagayan at 39 degrees Celsius on April 25.
Last year’s hottest temperature was also recorded in Tuguegarao at 37.5 degrees Celsius on April 26, 2013.
The all-time warmest temperature recorded in the Philippines was in Tuguegarao in 1969 at 42.2 degrees Celsius.
Aurelio clarified that while Tuguegarao is one of the hottest parts of the country, the records only represent areas where Pagasa has monitoring stations.
