Signal 1 raised in parts of Mindanao as LPA develops into tropical depression

MANILA, Philippines—The low pressure area that entered the country’s area of responsibility Wednesday developed into a tropical depression on Friday and was named Caloy by the state weather bureau.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) raised Signal No. 1 in certain parts of Mindanao as it spotted the tropical depression 360 kilometers east of Davao City.
Pagasa said Caloy packed maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center and was forecast to move west slowly.
Signal 1 was hoisted in the following Mindanao provincess:
— Davao Oriental
— Davao del Norte
— Surigao del Sur
— Agusan del Sur
— Compostela Valley
Residents in those provinces were alerted of possible flashfloods and landslides. A rainfall amount of 5-15 mm per hour or moderate to heavy rains were forecast within the 300-kilometer diameter of Caloy.
Fishing boats and other small seacraft were also advised not to venture into the northern seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon due to the northeast monsoon.
