MANILA, Philippines — The employment rate in the National Capital Region went up by 2.38 percent during the third quarter of 2013 as more people signed up for work compared to those who were fired or voluntarily quit their jobs, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced.

According to the Labor Turnover Survey (LTS) of the DOLE’s Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics (BLES) which was released on Monday, Metro Manila registered a labor turnover rate of 2.38 percent in the third quarter of 2013, slightly higher than the 2.35 percent during the same period in 2012.

The data assesses job creation, accession and displacement as the BLES gets the labor turnover rate from the difference between job accession and job separation.

“Employment in large enterprises in Metro Manila continued its growth in the third quarter of 2013  driven by the robust growth in the domestic economy,” Labor Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said in a statement.

The BLES survey, which was conducted quarterly had 763 large enterprises as respondents for a retrieval rate of 99.1 percent.

Specifically, the overall accession rate in Metro Manila was 8.7 percent, higher than the 5.99 percent separation rate registered during the reference period.

The survey showed that 84 out of 1,000 workers were hired due to expansion or as replacements while only 60 workers out of every 1,000 were either laid off or quit their jobs during the same period.

The strongest growth was recorded in the industry and services sector with construction and agriculture, fishery and forestry not far behind.
