Palace monitoring landslide-hit areas in Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines – A Palace official on Monday assured the public that the government is monitoring the situation in Mindanao and ensuring the safety of residents from landslides and floods.

Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma told media that local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Councils (DRRMC) are focused on securing affected communities.

“Masinsin ang pagtutok ng mga local na DRRMC upang tiyakin ang kaligtasan ng mga mamamayan sa mga apektadong komunidad at ang kanilang agarang pagkilos ay sinusubaybayan ng NDRRMC,” Coloma said.

At least 13 people have been killed in Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley on Monday morning due to flooding and landslides brought about by a low pressure area. More than 30 people were injured while 120 houses were destroyed.

Thousands of families have been evacuated and classes were suspended as heavy rains continue to pummel the region.
