Marikina’s 100 CCTVs for both crime, flood watch

The Marikina City government has begun installing 100 closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs) on major roads and other strategic locations, hoping they would be useful  for both police operations and flood monitoring.

Some of the CCTVs are already in place on Sumulong, Bayan-bayanan and Gil Fernando Avenues, according to the city’s public information office (PIO).

Mayor Del de Guzman on Thursday said the cameras would “definitely help save lives” also during calamities as they would give local authorities a real-time view of rising floodwaters, particularly in riverside communities.

Several CCTVs had been installed near and under the bridge which passes over Marikina River in Barangay Sto. Niño, he noted.

Another camera in Barangay Kalumpang would also be helpful in monitoring water levels, PIO chief Paul Sison added.

The CCTV installation, which would cost around P44 million, is expected to be completed in December, Sison said. Kristine Felisse Mangunay
