F.U.N.: “Invisible Son”

/ 06:31 AM September 07, 2013

“Dad…?” Bruce came rushing to his father who was busy installing the living room curtains.

“Hi, Bruce,” his dad carefully descended the ladder to greet his son with a warm embrace. “Wanna help dad with the curtains?”

“Oh… Okay! What do I do?”

“Since I will be up the ladder most of the time, why don’t you hand me the things I need to repair these?”

“Only that…?”

“Yup, only that. Easy…?”

“Yep, very easy…,”

“Now then, please hand me the screwdriver …,”

“Dad, what does invisible mean?” Bruce handed the screwdriver.

“Why do you ask?”

“’Coz Jamie said that God and angels are invisible.”

“So you mean that ‘invisible,’” his father smiled.

“Yeah, that ‘invisible!’”

“It simply means ‘something that can’t be seen with our eyes.’” He checked if the curtain rods were firm.

“Like hiding?” Bruce clarified.

“Yes, but not exactly… Here’s the screwdriver. Now gently give me that string over there…,” he pointed at the spool of string on the floor.

“So what then?”

“You liked the T-shirt I gave you?”

“Of course, I like the cool colors,” Bruce recalled.

“What was written on it?”

“It said, WE LOVE YOU, MOM & DAD!”

“Can you say that what you are wearing is mom and dad’s love?”

“I guess not, ‘coz it’s a T-shirt.”

“Smart answer, son!”

“That’s invisible?” Bruce was a bit confused.

“Hold your horses, young man. I haven’t finished yet!”

“Sorry…,” Bruce handed the spool of string.

“Now, can we say that the T-shirt is ALL of our love for you?”

“Nope…!”

“Right! Because if it were, then there’s nothing more to mom and dad’s love.”

“…uh, okay. But what about invisible?”

“Let’s just say that the most wonderful and fantastic things in life are often invisible,” his father scratched his chin.

“But if it’s so wonderful and fantastic, then why can’t we see them?”

“Because if they were something ‘visible’ and can fit in your pocket, then their being great and marvelous is limited.”

“Limited…?” Bruce asked.

“Oh, yeah. You remember how we laughed so hard when we watched Despicable Me…?”

Bruce giggled…

“Well, would you enjoy the movie if it had no ending. I mean if it just continued on and on…?”

“I guess not, sides it would be too long and we also had to take dinner after….,” Bruce understood.

“God is something like that. He’s so great, wonderful and fantastic… and nothing in the world can describe or contain His love and goodness. If something could, then God would not be God.”

“But if He’s so good and wonderful why is He invisible…?” Bruce tried to clarify.

“Well, I guess I’m just going to confuse there, but maybe it’s better to say that God isn’t making Himself invisible, but our eyes, ears and feelings cannot perfectly compare God to anything that we know in the world.”

“Then how can we love Him…?”

“I was getting to that… Please carefully hand me the tape.”

Bruce passed on the roll of sticky duct tape.

“We can love God also using invisible things!”

“Invisible things…?”

“Yes! For example, can you see prayer?”

“Nope….”

“Another would be offering my work and love now for Jesus and you. I bet you didn’t know that and can’t see it either, did you?”

“You mean only invisible stuff can be given to God?”

“What you do and finish aren’t exactly invisible, but it is the love in your heart –doing them for Jesus– is what is invisible. People who don’t have this invisible love only end up doing things, but not offering it to Jesus.”

“So is that what you do the whole day, dad?”

“Do what…, son?”

“Doing invisible things?”

“Well, you can say that, but I guess something has to be seen on the outside. For example, yesterday when I walked to the coffee machine in the office, I said a prayer and offered waiting in line for mom and her intentions.”

“Wow, the line must have been long!”

“Not so looong, but the traffic in EDSA was longer and gave me more time to remember and pray for mom, you and your younger sister Chelsey.”

“Remembering Chelsey?” Bruce reacted as if he recalled something.

“So you see, you can do many things, but what really matters would be doing them out of love from the heart for Jesus!”

“So what do you think about the curtains, Bruce…?”

No one replied.

“Bruce…?” He turned around and realized his son was no longer there.

“Bruce, where are you?”

A soft voice whispered from behind the curtains, “Dad, can you call Chelsey? I’m going to be invisible and when she comes in I will scare her….”
