THE ‘mermaid’ of Malapascua Island has attracted corporate support to promote diving and marine conservation.

The Save the Philippine Seas and The Islands Group launched yesterday the campaign “The Philippines is worth diving for.”

The partnership between Save the Philippine Seas (SPS) and the Islands Group extends to promoting Malapascua Island.

“When you love something, you need to protect it,” said Anna Oposa, chief mermaid of the SPS.

She said she hopes her Thresher Shark Shelter Project in Malapascua Island will eventually grow to the scale of the protected area of the Tubattaha Reef.

“The Visayas Sea is rich in marine life and corals and we need to protect it,”she added.
