Cayetano confident RH law has ‘strong’ case ahead of debates

MANILA, Philippines — Senator Pia Cayetano is confident that she and other proponents of the controversial Reproductive Health law have a “strong” case for its constitutionality and legality when they face the Supreme Court Tuesday, as she urged its immediate resolution.
“I look forward to Tuesday’s oral arguments on the RH Law where the petitioners will present their case. I also welcome the opportunity, when our turn comes, to present before the High Court our arguments on its constitutionality and legality,” Cayetano, sponsor of the measure in the Senate, said in a statement on Tuesday.
“I am confident that our group – the respondents and the intervenors – have a strong case,” she said.
As sponsor of the measure in the Senate, Cayetano said she worked “meticulously on each and every provision to ensure its constitutionality.”
“And to deny RH services from our people would be a denial of human rights and a grave social injustice, especially against women and the poor,” she said.
Cayetano then called for the “early resolution” of the case.
“The implementation of the law has been restrained for 120 days and in the meantime, 15 women die each day,” she pointed out.
