Since the change of leadership at the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) in September, a total of 531 personnel have been penalized although Director Leonardo Espina said that the “good cops” still outnumber the “bad eggs.”

According to him, during the same period, he also honored 10,966 policemen for their good performance.

Espina said that since September, he has ordered the dismissal from the service of 165 policemen, demoted 108 others and meted out suspensions to 258.

The policemen’s violations ranged from going AWOL (absent without official leave) for more than 30 days, failing to attend court hearings, being negligent of duties, to involvement in criminal cases such as robbery-extortion, serious physical injury, violence against women and children, murder, homicide, rape and possession or use of illegal drugs.

“The NCRPO will allow only real policemen by heart and deeds to stay in the organization. Erring and abusive policemen have no right to be part of the organization,” Espina said in a statement.

At the same time, he announced that 2,417 Metro police personnel have been cited for their various accomplishments as endorsed by their immediate supervisors as of June 7.

The NCRPO has distributed awards to 10,966 policemen since September.

“We encourage the public to help us improve our performance. I ask the public to report immediately the good deeds of their police so we can duly recognize them,” Espina said.—Jaymee T. Gamil
