Wakee plans to stage world title bout in Cebu

/ 06:47 AM May 31, 2013

Boxing promoter Rex ‘Wakee’ Salud is planning to stage a World Boxing Organization (WBO) world title bout here in Cebu between two undefeated foreign boxers – WBO bantamweight world champion Paulus Ambunda (20-0, 10 KOs) of Namibia and challenger Tomoki Kameda (27-0, 18 KOs) of Japan.

In an article posted on philboxing.com, Salud said that the venue of the fight will either be at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino in Lahug or the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City on August 1.

The Kameda boxing clan have been to Wakee’s gym in Labangon, Cebu City last year, with brothers Koki and Daiki Kameda sparring with the RWS boxers to prepare for their fights in Japan.

Koki is the WBA bantamweight champion while Daiki is a former WBA flyweight champion. Their younger brother Tomoki will be fighting for a world crown for the first time.

Ambunda dethroned Pungluang Sor Singyu of Thailand for his world title. Pungluang is known to Filipino fans for beating AJ Banal by 9th round TKO last year at the Mall of Asia Arena.

If this plan pushes through, this will mark the second time that two foreign boxers will fight in the main event here in Cebu.

In 2009, SGG Promotions held a fight card at the Cebu Coliseum headlined by Australian Michael Katsidis versus Spain’s Angel Hugo Ramirez.

RWS Promotions plan to have their top two fighters, Marlon Tapales and Marco Demecillo fight separate opponents in the undercard.

Tapales won in Japan last May 26, beating Indonesian Ruben Manakane by 4th round TKO while Demecillo will be looking to bounce back from his unanimous decision loss to OPBF superflyweight titlist Arthur Villanueva in Davao City last month.
