Cebu province now LP bailiwick?

/ 09:09 AM May 18, 2013

WITH the Capitol in the hands of a new governor and vice governor, Cebu is now a Liberal Party bailiwick, said LP-Cebu spokesman Democrito Barcenas.
He noted that governor-elect Hilario Davide III won in almost all of the six congressional districts.
He also cited the defeat of 2nd district Rep. Pablo Garcia who was unseated by Wilfredo Caminero, a member of the Provincial Board.
Caminero garnered a total of 91,529 votes compared to Garcia’a 86,105 votes.
“Their battleground was the province. The candidate of UNA/ One Cebu, Pablo John Garcia, suffered a loss of more than 130,000 votes. Assuming that we lost the 3rd and 4th congressional district, those would have been merely consolation prizes for them. The major jackpot is the governorship,” said Barcenas.
Barcenas said four factors clinched the victory for the party’s candidates.
He cited the “universal desire of the Cebuanos to get rid of the Garcia dynasty”, issues of graft and corruption against the Garcia administration, the endorsement of President Aquino and the 6-month suspension of Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.
“If she were not suspended, she would still be controlling the Capitol. They would have used government resources like fuel and vehicles. But now, they weren’t able to,”he said.
In a separate interview, Caminero said he was able to get the message across to Cebuanos in south Cebu that new blood was needed to achieve a better future.
Caminero said agriculture would be his top priority for the district because of low spending for the farming sector by the Capitol.
SOCO CONCEDES
Glenn Soco conceded defeat in his second try at the vice gubernatorial election.
He said he would continue his advocacy for positive change and “continue to serve the public with my own means.”
“Given the results of the provincial canvassing, it is now time to move forward…. I ran single-handedly defying a lot of conventional political wisdom, but I stood my ground to mount my own campaign despite my limitations and challenges so I could bring my noble aspirations to as many of our people. Being a neophyte in politics, I aspired to push for a good message and effect positive change in government and our political system. I did my best and I fought a good fight,” he said.
